Australian Open

If you watch tennis, or play on occasion, you get the sense that it is much like the game of life.  Back and forth: wit, talent, determination and luck.  Sometimes you can pull it all together but still the opponent wins the game.  In life, it’s a day at a time, win or lose. Take the analogy to a personal endeavor like writing and you know the volley of writing, the give and take, is as consuming as a tennis match.  Words, plots, characters come at you like a ball hit by Frederoff or Nadal.  You hit back, work hard to put the action on paper, sweat to make each line a winner.  When you get to ‘love’ with a response from an agent, you’ll do anything to win the match.  Sometimes no matter what you do, how the words sound as solid as your best ball, they bounce out of bounds on someone elses ears and you lose.  There’s no certainity in any game—life tennis or writing.  The only thing that counts is the will, desire to keep playing.  Today…I feel kind of lucky, let’s see if wit, talent and determination takes center court with a trophy over my head—ah, I’m hoping for a book sale.  I’ve got a response from an agent….we’ll see.  Cheers, Wil
