Weather…Whether

It’s about 20*s colder than normal for this time of year.  And I’m in a warm climate.  Jackets and long pants are the order of the day.  But there are still a few diehards (or tourists) out today in shorts and short sleeves who must believe in the rule ‘when in Rome’….except I know Rome changes…sometimes doesn’t live up to its reputation.  Of course, there is a possibility the diehard is a member of the Al Gore crowd who still tries to convince us if we don’t stop driving cars, change our carbon foot path, we’re going to burn up the world.  Kind of convoluted thinking and a hard way to get a point across by getting frost bite in the ‘sunny’ south.  It could be the shorts/short sleeve shirt guy’s  strident action is a spin off from the Michael Moore propaganda, too.  Moore put a fire under his  feet with the notion the planet was overheating and we were all doomed.  Our fine earth destroyed by ‘our’ bad behavior and, of course, everyone but him to blame for the diabolical disaster.  All unscientific thesis, but why let evidence get in the way of whimsy.  He left out a few facts…like where the temperatures were being recorded–airport settings for the most part where the ambient temperatures were altered by air flow on heating absorbing cement strips, where high traffic flowed and human bodies congregated.  Data from only 30-40 years, speculations about cause and effect, ignoring the reality of miniscule change in thousand year cycles.  What cycle are we really in?  Maybe Moore was just eating another bucket of french fries from a very hot boiler at the time he thought about climate change and got overheated.  The next step in logic would be the world is aflame.  But that is neither here nor there.  This is about weather and whether we can fool ourselves into thinking we have control over it.  More often, desire fools our fire…our actions.  In Florida, pack only shorts…it’s always hot.  A friend emailed me a photo from up north that sort of proves my point.  It doesn’t snow often in Manhatten, so there’s no need for boots.  A grand picture of a woman in her 4 inch spikes trudging down 48th street with slush near up to her hiney looked as ridiculous as the guy in his short shorts walking down International Boulevard with a mere 42 degrees nipping at his ass.  You’ve got to give them credit for sticking to their beliefs or habits …those shorts and spikes people.  Whether we change or weather changes-has, always will-people either adapt and go with the flow or succumb to chaos and falter.  Many fool ignor fluctuations, facts, fashion and finite details.  What those kind often do is make us look twice at our own actions.  I saw the guy in shorts today and took a second glance at the sky.  Cloudy.  I raised my hand.  Winds from the north.  Touched my nose.  Hmmm….a little chilly.  He just kept right on walking down the street, not a care in the world it seemed.  I went back in the house and put on another sweater.
